The challenge: redesign the market street experience.
Market Street is one of the busiest streets in San Francisco. Between 3rd and 4th streets, local workers and commuters switch between the Powell Street BART station and the MUNI bus stop; tourists, shoppers, and cafe-goers add to the steady stream of foot traffic as they head towards the city's main shopping districts, or visit the Yerba Buena Gardens just around the corner.
The challenge that the SF Mayor's Office of Innovation, the Exploratorium, and Gehl Architects presented to our team was this: take this 60' x 20' space on Market Street, and do something with it. Make it greener. Make it more exciting. Make people want to linger. In short, make it better.
